LE POMMIER WINE ESTATE

Everyone of us has a dream no matter how big or small, no matter how silly or serious…just a dream.  Being a tour guide and often passing Le Pommier Wine Estate, just over the Helshoogte Pass on your way to Franschhoek,  I would always say to my international guests…ONE DAY I WILL LAY ON THAT TERRACE AND LOOK OVER THE DAM AT THE WATER FOUNTAIN AND STRETCHES OF MOUNTAINS IN THE DISTANCE….and that day came after 10 years… I had the amazing opportunity of spending the night at Le Pommier.

On arrival we were greeted by Candice who is very warm, friendly and helpful.  She welcomed us and drove with us to our accommodation and gave us a brief of where everything was before we settled into our luxury suite set alongside the dam with a water fountain and the majestic mountains being the backdrop.  Our suite was beautiful, by the way I love white and almost everything was white, so of course I fell in love with the room. The suite is quite big with a lounge area and bar fridge, coffee station, the 4 poster bed is beautiful, a fireplace indoors and the bathroom with the Victorian bath was super special, just what I needed later after a full day spent in Franschhoek, a bubble bath!

The scenery from the room is so so pretty.  The dam is home to some really big fish and a family of ducks as well as really pretty flowers and willow trees hanging over the water and you are surrounded by huge majestic mountains.   When it’s really hot, and it can get hot in the Valley, then you have a choice of a rim pool on the deck with braai facilities or a sparkling blue pool alongside the vineyards, both have loungers for you to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet surrounding you.

We decided on dinner at the Le Pommier Restaurant and were not sorry.  The food was excellent.  We decided on the Cape Malay chicken curry and the Bobotie, both served with sambals and yellow rice (we chose very South African dishes as you can see).  It was quite a large portion but so tasty and I literally licked the bowl clean.  There unfortunately was no place for desert…maybe next time!

The walk back to the room was beautiful under the starry skies and the sound of the fountain splashing on the water was tranquil.  We sat outside for a while appreciating this but once it started getting chilly it was time to head in.

We awoke the next morning feeling very refreshed and ready for the day.  The bed and bedding is of very good quality and we had a very good nights sleep.

We headed for breakfast at the restaurant and I enjoyed a half portion of Eggs Benedict as I am not a big eater and my husband had a Banhoek breakfast along with coffee and juice.  It was delicious.  The staff at the restaurant are friendly and accommodating.

We chose the right week end as they had a market, and I love markets.  We strolled through the stalls and I bought a dress from On Point, we did a gin tasting and of course could not leave without a bottle or two.  It was lovely.  We sat outside on the lawns soaking in the beautiful weather while they prepared our wine pairing.

We headed over to the wine tasting centre for a private wine pairing with Marc.  It was fantabulous.  Marc is really great at what he does and is very knowledgeable and passionate about the wines.

We tried 3 different wines:

Le Pommier Sauvignon Blanc 2021 paired with a creamy whipped feta with garlic and herb roasted cherry tomatoes with served grilled bread paired and secondly homed made chicken pie.

Le Pommier Rosé 2021 paired with smoked salmon and crème fraiche on a cucumber slice and secondly their homemade Bobotie.

Le Pommier Mac (cabernet franc Malbec) 2020 paired with Beef Carpaccio, pickled Shimeji mushroom and parmesan shavings.

Finally we had to bid farewell to this beautiful piece of heaven in Franschhoek…but not without our 2 cases of wine.

Thanks so much for having us stay and for allowing us to experience Le Pommier Wine Estate.
