NORTHERN CAPE

The Northern Cape is South Africa’s largest province by land area, covering about 30% of the country, but it’s also the least densely populated. It’s a land of extremes—vast open spaces, dramatic deserts, and striking skies that seem endless. The province is dominated by the Kalahari Desert in the east and the Namaqualand region in the west.

Summers are hot and dry, while winters can be surprisingly cold at night, especially in desert areas and many areas receive very little rainfall, making it semi-arid to arid.

The Orange River runs along its northern border, creating fertile green belts in contrast to the arid surroundings and it offers wide open plains, red sand dunes, rocky mountains and big skies.

The Northern Cape has some of the clearest night skies in the world. Near the town of Sutherland you’ll find the South African Astronomical Observatory, home to major telescopes and astronomy tours.
